What is AI-powered Bing

Quoting Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, we can say that Microsoft’s new AI-powered Bing will bring “a new day in search”. Evidently, the AI-powered Bing is going to revolutionize how we search. Bing and Microsoft Edge have been losing to Google search quite badly in the race. But this new collaboration of OpenAI and Mircosoft might just be the game changer they need.

The new AI-powered Bing will provide you with a co-pilot for your searches and actually give you personalized results based on your questions. Instead of focusing on three or four individual keywords. The new Bing and Edge browser has launched a few days ago on 7th February 2023. “AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft.

Characteristics of the new AI-powered Bing

The technicalities of searching for stuff in browsers have been pretty basic until now. Because the search engines would focus on individual keywords instead of taking in the whole meaning of the search. Now, that works great when you are looking for a website or a specific “How to…” article. But, what happens when your search is more complex than that? Search engines until now were merely mathematical but with the new AI-powered Bing it is not an engine anymore, it is your co-pilot. A copilot, who can understand you almost as well as another human being. Let’s look at what the new Bing can do–

Better search results

With this new AI-powered Bing, your search experience will be whatever you want it to be. For example, if you’re in a hurry and want comprehensive, reliable data you can look at the sidebar of data designed for exactly that. But if you are looking for more thorough, minute research you can look at the main search results. In this way, the search experience does not feel unfamiliar and new. But, it gives you an improved set of results anyway.

Full answers

We have all suffered from the case of insufficient-answers in our browser searches. But with this new technology and artificial intelligence, we will suffer no more. Because the AI will not only analyze your current search but include results of something you might search for later. For example, if you are searching for a specific university’s admission process it will automatically line up results for the comprehensive knowledge of the courses that the college might offer.

Chat experience with the AI-powered Bing

This is the most fun part of this new AI-powered Bing. This search engine is designed in a way that your thirst for knowledge can be satisfied as much as possible. That’s why it is best suited for elaborate searches. For example, if you’re planning a trip and want to get detailed information about hotels, food, and sites, you can chat with the engine to get a holistic set of information. Because you actually interact with the engine and engage in factual conversation, your search results are more refined.

The AI-powered Bing does not just answer

It might be a little bit of an exaggeration but not really if we say that Microsoft just solved your writer’s block. Because the new Bing doesn’t just provide you with answers it gives you inspiration. With the new Bing, you can even write student essays and generate other content. The new Bing also sites its references for the content it generates so you can crosscheck.

Updated Microsoft Edge

Microsoft had updated Edge with two new functions and has given it a new look. The new functions we are discussing here are–chat and compose. We have already talked about the sidebar. But what we haven’t talked about is we can instruct the Edge Sidebar to compose a lengthy report into just facts. This way, you can access only the key takeaways of, say, a lengthy financial report. We can then use the chat to ask for a similar comparison or contrast between the financial reports of two similar and competing businesses. And we can do the same thing with two articles from two competing websites.

The composing feature of Edge will let you instruct Edge on the format, length, and tone of the content. And if you provide the basic prompts it will compose content for you based on what platform you want it to go on. For example, if you are writing a post on LinkedIn, you obviously need it to be appealing, compact, and professional. The Edge will understand what webpage you’re on and compose accordingly.

What is OpenAI’s Chat GPT and How Does it help AI-powered Bing?

What is Chat GPT?

Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, aka, ChatGPT was first introduced by the now famous startup OpenAI. They launched it on November 30, 2022. It was built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3 family as a larger language model. It uses both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques. Chat GPT is primarily a type of Chatbot.

When Chat GPT was first developed it garnered huge and urgent attention from artificial intelligence enthusiasts for the varied range of responses and its detail-oriented answers and articulation. By December 4, Chat GPT had over a million users and OpenAI was valued at 29 billion U.S. Dollars. In January the user number reached 100 million making it the fastest-growing consumer application to date.

Features

  • It can write and debug computer programs.
  • Also, write fairytales, poems, teleplays, and student essays, and compose music.
  • It can also take tests, sometimes more efficiently than an average human examinee, depending on the test.
  • It can emulate a Linux system,
  • Simulate an entire chatroom and an ATM
  • And play tic-tac-toe.
  • It tries to reduce harmful and deceitful responses and does a better job than its predecessor InstructGPT.
  • ChatGPT remembers previous prompts given to it in the same conversation.
  • OpenAI’s company-wide moderation API filters query to prevent offensive output.

Limitation

  • Users have complained that ChatGPT sometimes generates nonsensical answers. This is a common problem for large language models and it is called artificial intelligence hallucinations.

How are the Chat GPT and the new Bing related?

It is a flawed idea that OpenAI’s ChatGPT is the main language model in the new AI-powered Bing. In fact, it is a developed language model which is a part of OpenAI’s next-generation development, that Bing is running on. Let’s look at the features of OpenAI and Microsoft’s collaborative effort.

Next Generation language model: The new language model is part of OpenAi’s next-generation large language model which is much more powerful than ChatGPT. Microsoft and OpenAi have customized this artificial language model specifically for search. It mainly takes key learnings from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 which has developed its perception and accuracy.

Prometheus Model: Microsoft has developed a proprietary way of leveraging OpenAI’s power in the best way possible. They are calling this collection of techniques and capabilities, The Prometheus Model. This model will help produce more targeted, precise, and relevant results.

AI in Core search Algorithm: Microsoft has applied this AI technology in their core Bing search ranking engine. They claim it has led to the biggest jump in the relevancy of search results in two decades, i.e, it understands your search deeply and the results are more relevant than ever. Even basic searches and queries have the most relevant results.

Responsible searches: Together with OpenAI, Microsoft has developed a search engine that reduces, if not eliminates offensive results. The new Bing’s security is unbeatable. Check out Microsoft’s AI principles to get a comprehensive idea of what they are protecting you against.

How to Access the new AI-powered Bing

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to access Microsoft’s new AI-powered Bing.

Step 1: You will need to get on the waitlist to access the new Bing. And to get on the waitlist you will need a Microsoft account. Go to the new Bing website Bing.com/new. Then click on the “join the waitlist” button.

Step 2: Then you have to log in to your Microsoft account. If you don’t have one, you’ll have to create it before you can log in.

Step 3: When you’re done logging in you will see a message which says “Great! You are on the waitlist” Now if you want to get accustomed to the new Bing you can click on the blue button that says “Access the new Bing Faster”.

Step 4: After you do that, Microsoft will give you a two-step direction. Firstly, you have to set Microsoft defaults on your PC. Secondly, you have to scan a QR code given to you to install the Microsoft Bing App. But be sure to sign in to Microsoft when you do both of these steps.

For the first step, you will need to set Bing as your default search engine on your computer. And for the second one, you just install the app on your phone and use it to ask questions.

In the meantime, you can also go back to the initial page and ask demo queries. On the original page, you will see it says “Ask anything”. And by clicking it you can pose demo queries to try out the new Bing, it won’t matter what your waitlist status is.
